As part of a $1.6billion entertainment project, Dubai is to build the world’s biggest Ferris wheel off the Jumeirah Beach Residence coastline.

Standing taller than the London Eye (443ft) and the Singapore Flyer (541ft), the 688ft Dubai Eye will be built off the coast of the emirate as part of the Bluewaters Island Project. This gigantic Ferris wheel will offer views of the Dubai coastline and famous landmarks such as the Burj

Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab. The piazza at the base of the wheel will serve as an entertainment zone and a unique venue for special occasions.

Construction of the Dubai Eye is expected to start in the second quarter of 2013 with the first stage of the Bluewaters development starting in April 2013. The first stage will include entertainment, retail, hospitality and residential areas and is expected to be complete in two years time. The destination will feature a souk encircled by a promenade with outdoor dining venues serving a variety of different cuisine. The souk itself will have a mixture of retail outlets in a traditional market atmosphere. A luxury five star hotel will complement the ambience of the project.

The Bluewaters Island will be connected to the mainland with a direct roadway from the Sheikh Zayed Road and will have a mono-rail system to transport visitors to the entertainment centre from the metro station. Alternatively, a pedestrian bridge will link the Bluewaters Island to the Jumeirah Beach Residence beachfront, while a cable car will transport visitors to the entertainment piazza.
